Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson took steps on Sept. 1 to recognize September as LGBTQ Business Month in the city.

In a proclamation that Johnson presented to the North Texas Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Chamber of Commerce, the mayor highlighted the city’s LGBTQ-owned businesses.

The North Texas Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Chamber of Commerce was created in 2005 and “has been the premier business organization for the LGBT community in North Texas.”

The chamber’s mission is “to improve the economic vitality of our region and support the positive attributes of a diverse workplace, supply chain, and community.”

The proclamation credits the North Texas LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce for its ongoing efforts to create and expand businesses in the area.

Through its work, the chamber has partnered with the city to establish a “more equitable and inclusive city, earning it a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index for six consecutive years.”

Dallas benefits financially from the largest LGBTQ+ population in Texas as it injects more than $4 billion into the economy. Furthermore, an estimated 4,000 LGBT-owned businesses in the Metroplex have a gross output of over $1.5 billion.
