Smartphone charger manufacturer Salcomp Manufacturing USA wants to move its U.S. headquarters to North Texas.
The company hopes to make Arlington the headquarters of its U.S. operations. Salcomp Manufacturing USA is owned by the tech power supply company Salcomp, based in Finland.
At its Oct. 15 meeting, the Arlington Economic Development Corp. board unanimously recommended approval of a $1.89 million incentives grant for Salcomp. The funds are intended to help the manufacturer expand into the region and hire new talent.
If successful, the manufacturer will bring 660 new jobs to North Texas, significantly boosting the local economy. Nearly a quarter of the new positions (more than 150) will earn average salaries of $122,000. For comparison, the average salary in Arlington is roughly $49,000 (about $23 per hour).
Salcomp plans to fill the roles with local residents or UT-Arlington graduates.
As part of the incentive grant, the new headquarters in Arlington must be announced by the end of 2024. The majority of administration and management for Salcomp Manufacturing USA must transition to the city by June 30, 2025, and Salcomp is required to invest $3 million in facility improvement.
Arlington City Council is expected to vote on the incentive grants on Oct. 22.
In addition to producing power supplies for smartphones and other electronic devices, Salcomp manufactures IoT (Internet of Things) sensors and precision structural parts and modules. According to the company’s website, Salcomp has produced four billion chargers, with a current capacity to build over half a billion annually.
Recently, the company secured an agreement with Fremont, California-based Enphase Energy to produce 60% of its solar panel microinverters here in North Texas. The production is being completed at Salcomp’s existing space in Arlington, located at 2400 Centennial Dr.
As of 2019, the company had roughly 12,000 employees worldwide.
