Meta announced a reorganization this week that led to layoffs within specific teams.

On Wednesday, the company announced that an undisclosed number of workers at Instagram, WhatsApp, Reality Labs, and other areas have been laid off.

“Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy,” said a Meta spokesperson in an emailed statement, reported TechCrunch.

“This includes moving some teams to different locations, and moving some employees to different roles. In situations like this when a role is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for impacted employees,” the statement from Meta continued.

An ex-staffer, who requested anonymity, informed TechCrunch that over a dozen individuals in their department were informed about the impact on their positions through video conferences on Wednesday.

The ex-staffer mentioned that some of the laid-off workers were given the option to either accept severance pay or transition to new roles with different employment contracts. Reportedly, some affected staff members were provided with six weeks of severance pay.

The exact number of employees affected by these layoffs has not been made public.

Meta clarified that this was not a company-wide downsizing.

In Los Angeles, a group of approximately 24 people were fired just days prior to this most recent round of layoffs, according to the Financial Times. Allegedly, these employees were making unauthorized purchases such as acne pads, wine glasses, and laundry detergent using their $25 meal credits.

Meta has announced this newest round of layoffs after cutting a total of 21,000 jobs in 2022 and 2023, as reported by UPI.
