The IRS is continuing to distribute $1,400 Recovery Rebate Credit payments to eligible individuals who did not receive the full amount in 2021.
Taxpayers have until April 15, 2025, to file a 2021 federal tax return and claim their missing funds.
To qualify for the full amount, individuals must have had an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $75,000 or less ($150,000 for married couples filing jointly).
The credit phases out for individuals earning up to $80,000 and couples up to $160,000. Even those with little or no income in 2021 must file a tax return to claim the rebate.
The process to claim the payment is straightforward. Taxpayers should file a 2021 tax return and ensure they complete the Recovery Rebate Credit section. The IRS offers an online tool, “Get My Payment,” to check payment status.
The IRS has been issuing automatic payments to some taxpayers who filed but did not claim the credit. These payments are expected to be completed by late January 2025. However, those who have not yet filed must submit their return before the deadline to receive the rebate.
Failure to file by April 15, 2025, will result in losing eligibility for the payment. Taxpayers who believe they qualify but have not received their check should visit the IRS website or consult a tax professional.
