GEICO, the second-largest auto insurer in the nation, announced Thursday that it has designated its office in North Texas as a main hub for serving commercial customers. This move is expected to bring an additional 500 new jobs to the area.

The company, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, announced that it is expanding operations at its office in Richardson, along with existing locations in Katy—near Houston—and Fredericksburg, Virginia.

The company says the expansion was prompted by substantial commercial insurance business growth over the past year and a half, driven by new products like long-haul trucking insurance. GEICO’s head of commercial insurance operations, Jason Andrukonis, says the company plans to begin filling roles immediately to take advantage of the eventual forecasted $300-plus billion commercial insurance market.

“The thriving business community and deep bench of talent in North Texas make it a perfect home for our growing small business insurance operations,” Andrukonis said in a statement from GEICO.

“We consider our investment today a down payment that will help position GEICO to become the premier destination for all small business insurance. These teams will help small businesses across the country save money and protect their livelihoods.”

Of the new positions, 300 will support GEICO’s commercial operations at the Richardson office. The other 200 jobs will be sales, service, and claims roles, supporting other lines of business.

GEICO will house the new employees at its existing 238,000-square-foot facility at 2280 N. Greenville Ave. The location currently has around 1,500 active employees.

“We’re excited to see this business expansion in our community and proud that GEICO continues to choose Richardson as one of its key operational hubs,” said Richardson Mayor Bob Dubey, per a company press release.

“Our focus remains on building a community where businesses and residents alike can thrive, supported by amenities that foster growth and success. This announcement is a strong indicator that our efforts are paying off — enhancing our local economy and workforce while attracting new opportunities for growth and expansion,” Dubey continued.

GEICO said it is looking to fill commercial insurance sales and service positions. Open jobs can be found on the company’s website.
