An alcoholic beverage mislabeled as an energy drink has prompted a recall across several states, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on Wednesday.
High Noon has issued a recall on certain 12-packs of its Beach Variety vodka seltzers, some of which contain cans mislabeled as Celsius Astro Vibe Energy Drink, Sparkling Blue Razz Edition, but filled with alcoholic seltzer. The affected 12-packs were shipped to retailers in Florida, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wisconsin between July 21 and July 23.
The recall involves two production lots with codes L CCC 17JL25 14:00 to L CCC 17JL25 23:59 and L CCC 18JL25 00:00 to L CCC 18JL25 03:00, found on the outside of the High Noon box.
“Even if not purchased in a High Noon Beach Variety pack, consumers should be advised to ensure their CELSIUS ASTRO VIBE Energy Drink, Sparkling Blue Razz Edition does not contain the lot codes L CCB 02JL25 2:55 to L CCB 02JL25 3:11, prior to consuming,” the recall notice stated.
The mislabeled cans will have a silver lid instead of the standard black lid, and the retail Celcius UPC 8 89392 00134 1.
The FDA warned that consuming these cans could lead to “unintentional alcohol ingestion,” as the High Noon seltzers have a 4.5% alcohol by volume content, unlike the non-alcoholic Celsius energy drink, which contains 200-270 milligrams of caffeine. No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported.
High Noon discovered the issue after a shared third-party packaging supplier mistakenly shipped empty Celsius cans to its production facility, where they were filled with vodka seltzer and packed into Beach Variety 12-packs. Celsius, known for its popularity among Gen Z and fitness enthusiasts, and High Noon, a top-selling U.S. spirit brand by volume since 2022, are produced by different companies but share the same supplier.
Consumers with affected products should not consume the contents and are directed to contact High Noon Consumer Relations at [email protected] for refund information.
High Noon and its parent company, Gallo, are working with Celsius and the supplier to investigate the error.
The FDA and High Noon emphasized that the recalled products should be disposed of safely to prevent accidental consumption.
