A new pizza restaurant chain is coming to Texas, making its state debut in Plano next month.

Hideaway Pizza is bringing back the dine-in experience for pizza lovers in an era when many pizza chains have opted to go with pick-up or delivery options only.

Although the restaurant chain has maintained its youthful and irreverent vibe, it is no new kid on the block. The original iteration of the restaurant — called The Hideaway — opened in 1957 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Third Street near the Oklahoma State University campus.

It was the second pizza restaurant to open in the state, and many OSU students ate pizza for the first time in their lives at The Hideaway.

In 1980, owners Richard and Marti Dermer moved the restaurant to a nearby location at the corner of University Avenue and Knoblock Street, where it remains in operation today. Over the years, multitudes of OSU students have eaten at the restaurant and worked there to pay their way through college.

The restaurant has grown from one location to 19 in Oklahoma, with four more in Arkansas. The new restaurant in Plano will mark the 24th in the company’s portfolio and the first in Texas. More locations are planned for McKinney and Fort Worth in the future.

The restaurant chain was purchased by Brett Murphy and Darrin Lester in 2006 and renamed Hideaway Pizza, but members of the Dermer family still operate the original location in Stillwater.

The restaurant’s menu offers pizza, of course, with 17 varieties of signature pies, build-your-own options, and a choice of crusts: thin, hand-tossed, gluten-free, or cauliflower. Topping choices include all that one would expect and some unexpected selections, such as Polish sausage, spicy capicola, blue cheese, feta, mandarin oranges, hot honey, and more.

In addition to pizza, the restaurant boasts a full menu of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, meatballs, pasta dishes, and desserts. And it has a full bar, where ice-cold beer is served up in frosty mugs, as CultureMap Dallas reported.

Hideaway Pizza, located in Plano at 5410 State Hwy 121, is slated to open in mid-October.
