Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport ranked fifth in the OAG’s Busiest Global Airports list this year — eight spots higher than its ranking four years ago.

With a capacity of more than 48 million seats, DFW ranked behind London Heathrow Airport, Tokyo International Airport, Dubai International Airport, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. In 2022, DFW was third in the same ranking, behind only Dubai and Atlanta.

“Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) ranks #1 with 61 million seats and was the busiest global airport in 2022 and 2019,” according to a news release from OAG. “Two U.S. airports in this year’s top 10 did not appear in the 2019 top 10: Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), ranking #5, and Denver International Airport (DEN), ranking #6. Rounding out the U.S. airports featured in this year’s Top 10 are Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), ranking #8, and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), ranking #9.”

The OAG analysis provides an overview of route performance and trends domestically and internationally. According to the data, JFK to London Heathrow is the only international route originating in the United States to be featured in the Top 10 Busiest Global International Airline Routes list, ranking eighth with almost 4 million seats in 2023. The release shows it is the only international route this year with capacity above 2019 levels, with 3.5 million seats from London to New York.

“Three routes that are featured in this year’s top 10 U.S. domestic routes did not appear in the top 10 in 2019. These are #1 ranking Honolulu (HNL) to Kahului (OGG), #5 ranking Denver (DEN) to Las Vegas (LAS), and #8 ranking Denver (DEN) to Phoenix (PHX). Los Angeles (LAX) to San Francisco (SFO) ranks #6 this year after ranking #1 in 2019.”

The busiest routes are defined as those with the largest volume of scheduled airline seats in 2023, according to the release. Distributed each year, the Busiest Routes report is compiled from OAG’s monthly Busiest Routes reports. Historical data from 2022 and 2019 is included for comparison.

Total airline capacity is used to rank the top 10 busiest global airports. The top 10 busiest international airports are determined by calculating international airline capacity, and rankings are based on scheduled one-way airline capacity for 2023.

Headquartered in the UK, OAG operates in the United States, Japan, China, Singapore, and Lithuania.

According to DFW Airport, more than 73 million customers enter the airport annually. DFW offers flights to 193 domestic and 67 international destinations through 28 airlines, which include American, Delta, and United.
