A new baby apparel brand based in Dallas has launched, offering stylish and sustainable clothing inspired by the Japanese philosophy of “wabi-sabi.”
The Japanese term “wabi-sabi” is the concept of finding beauty in imperfection.
Now, Dallas resident Sofia Deva’s new venture, BabiSabi, offers children’s clothing that embraces this concept.
BabiSabi offers a curated line of baby clothing that Deva calls “baby couture.” All BabiSabi pieces are handmade by women in rural India using natural dyes, each taking an entire day to produce.
“We operate with an ethos of evolving craft tradition with care and consciousness, and are proud to say we know the name and story of every maker we work with,” reads the company’s website.
“As a godmother and aunt, I wanted to create a brand that reflects the values I hold dear — community, sustainability, and compassion. … Through BabiSabi, we aim to inspire parents to not only clothe their little ones in beautiful, meaningful apparel but also to feel connected to a larger purpose,” Deva said in a statement, per Dallas Innovates.
BabiSabi offers clothing and accessories for newborns, infants, toddlers, and young children.
The company focuses on traditional materials and craftsmanship, like woolen knits made in Uttarakhand, elaborate embroidery from Mysore, and French-inspired crochet from Narsapur in Andra Pradesh.
After becoming an aunt and godmother, Deva says she was inspired to produce baby clothing using ethical practices and gentle materials.
“I hope you’ll use, cherish and pass down these one-of-a-kind pieces, and that they’ll add a little extra magic to your growing family, from ours,” Deva wrote in a blog post last year.
“I can’t even handle the cuteness in the @officialbabisabi. The MOST gorgeous pieces I’ve ever laid my eyes on. They are handcrafted with beautiful materials. You can also customize them for the best baby shower gift!” wrote one user on Instagram.
Currently, BabiSabi is only available for purchase online.
