Nearly a year after Buc-ee’s was scheduled to begin construction of a car wash at one of its two Denton County locations, the project appears to be back on track.
The company, known for its billboard advertising and massive convenience stores with dozens of fuel pumps, has applied for a commercial building permit with Fort Worth to build the facility at 15901 North Fwy., just off Interstate 35 West near the Texas Motor Speedway, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Its other Denton County store is in Denton, on South Interstate 35 East.
A Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing from 2022 shows the $6 million project was initially set for February 2023 and had an anticipated delivery date of August the same year for the 5,647-square-foot car wash.
Founded in 1982, Buc-ee’s is based in Lake Jackson, a suburb of Houston. In addition to the Denton store, Buc-ee’s has built car washes in Lake Jackson, Richmond, Katy, and Cypress. The only other stores with car washes are in Alabama and Tennessee.
Nationally, Buc-ee’s operates 47 stores — 34 of them in Texas. The “always-open” store claims to have set the world record for owning the largest convenience store in Tennessee at 74,707 square feet and for having the longest car wash — 255 feet of conveyor — at its Katy location.
It also prides itself on having “the cleanest restrooms in America” and the roadside marketing that includes such phrases as, “The beaver made me do it,” “Risk it for the brisket,” and, “It’s a Texas thang.”
Buc-ee’s offers several fuel types as well as charging stations for electric vehicles.
