BMW of North America, LLC is recalling nearly 90,000 vehicles in the United States after federal regulators determined that an engine starter defect could overheat and, in some cases, catch fire.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects 87,394 vehicles and involves an engine starter that may overheat due to wear on an internal component. The issue is classified under NHTSA Recall ID No. 26V056000.

Federal regulators said the defect involves the vehicle’s electrical system and could lead to a fire if the starter overheats.

The recall applies to the following vehicles sold in the United States:

  • 2021–2023 Toyota Supra
  • 2022–2023 BMW 2 Series Coupé
  • 2021–2024 BMW 3 Series (330i)
  • 2021–2024 BMW 4 Series (Coupe, Convertible, and Gran Coupé variants)
  • 2021–2024 BMW 5 Series (530i and xDrive)
  • 2021–2022 BMW Z4
  • 2021–2024 BMW X3
  • 2021–2023 BMW X4

Remedy and Owner Notification

BMW said dealers will replace the engine starter free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning March 24, 2026. At that time, affected vehicle identification numbers (VINs) will also be searchable on NHTSA.gov.
