American Airlines plans to offer all AAdvantage loyalty members free Wi-Fi beginning in January 2026.

The Texas-based carrier has partnered with AT&T to provide the service across approximately 90% of its fleet, covering more than 2 million annual flights.

This move follows similar initiatives by competitors in the airline industry. Delta Airlines began offering free Wi-Fi to SkyMiles members in 2023 through a partnership with T-Mobile, while United Airlines will launch its complimentary service in May 2025 using Starlink technology for MileagePlus members.

“This was a natural partnership in every aspect: two iconic Texas-based brands, known for innovation and connection,” said Heather Garboden, American Airlines’ chief customer officer.

Currently, passengers pay around $10 per flight for Wi-Fi access or can purchase monthly or annual passes ranging from $50 to $700. The transition to free in-flight Wi-Fi represents a significant enhancement to the customer experience.

The complimentary service will only be available to members of American’s AAdvantage loyalty program, which is free to join. This requirement aligns with American’s strategy to boost enrollment in its loyalty program while improving services for frequent flyers.

Industry analysts note that in-flight connectivity has become an increasingly important factor for travelers when choosing airlines. The free Wi-Fi offering may help American attract and retain customers in the competitive air travel market.

Eliminating Wi-Fi fees represents a meaningful cost savings for travelers, particularly frequent flyers who regularly depend on in-flight connectivity for work or entertainment.
