A widespread disruption at Amazon Web Services, the world’s largest cloud provider, impacted the services of numerous platforms early Monday.
Degraded services were reported on financial platforms Coinbase and Robinhood, as well as platforms like Perplexity, Snapchat, and Facebook.
AWS reportedly identified a problem with a regional gateway on the U.S. East Coast that led to the disruption and worked on “multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery,” the company said, per Bloomberg. User complaints began rolling in around 7:30 a.m. London, with Downdetector showing thousands of reported user issues.
AWS is the most popular cloud service globally, serving as the backbone for a significant portion of the internet. Roughly one-third of the cloud market is held by Amazon.
Both Robinhood and Coinbase said that the AWS issue was impacting their services, while Perplexity confirmed the problem had disrupted the stability of its website. Popular video games like Roblox and Fortnite were also potentially affected by the issue, as was the corporate messaging service Slack.
Amazon’s own services also experienced challenges, with user complaints spiking for Alexa and the home security system, Ring.
As of 5:54 a.m. CDT, the AWS Health Dashboard was reporting no current issues.
