Aside from George Strait and Beyoncé, next to no native Texan artist is as well-known and well-loved as Selena Quintanilla Pérez. Next month, fans in her home state will get a chance to hear a tribute to the “Queen of Tejano” at the Granville Arts Center in Garland.
Bidi Bidi Banda, an Austin tribute band, brings Selena y Los Dinos’ powerful lyrics, energy, and cumbia to the stage for a memorable show, and in September, they will bring that performance to North Texas.
Selena, who was born in Lake Jackson, captivated fans with her voice and sense of style. She was named one of the top three Latin artists of all time by Billboard in 2020. The youngest of the three Quintanilla siblings, Selena was front and center while her sister and brother backed her up on the drums and guitar, respectively.
Early in her career, Selena couldn’t get booked for gigs playing Tejano music, often considered a male-dominated genre. Things changed when she won a Tejano Music Award in 1987 for female vocalist of the year — an award she would win eight more times.
In 1989, Selena signed with EMI and released her self-titled debut album. After rising to the top of the charts, winning a Grammy, and launching a thriving clothing boutique, Selena was shot on March 31, 1995, by Yolanda Salazar, president of her fan club and the boutique’s manager.
To date, fans across Texas and beyond celebrate Selena’s life through her music. Once again, Selena fans will come together for a night of music and memories.
Reminisce and sing along with other Selena superfans on Saturday, September 17, starting at 8 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door and at the Garland Arts Box Office.
