The transfer portal wheels continue churning in college football, with former Texas quarterback Hudson Card being the latest to announce a new home.
Card, a redshirt sophomore who was a four-star high school prospect, will continue his college career at Purdue.
Over three seasons with the Longhorns, Card passed for 1,523 yards and 11 touchdowns with a 65.5% completion rate.
He fills a void for Purdue with its starting quarterback Aidan O’Connell set to enter the NFL Draft and freshman Brady Allen entering the transfer portal on Monday.
Card graduated from Austin’s Lake Travis High School in Texas, the rival high school of Purdue football legend Drew Brees, who went to Austin’s Westlake.
Card, rated the No.2 dual-threat quarterback in the nation coming out of high school, appears to be an excellent fit for a Purdue team that recently hired Graham Harrell as offensive coordinator.
Harrell is a Mike Leach disciple who has run different versions of the “Air Raid” in stops at North Texas, USC, and West Virginia.
Card is one of 14 Longhorns who have entered the transfer portal to leave Austin. Most recently, former four-star wide receiver Agiye Hall entered the transfer portal after a one-year tenure in Austin after transferring to Texas from Alabama last offseason.
The Longhorns have only secured two transfer commitments in three-star punter Ryan Sanborn from Stanford and four-star defensive back Gavin Holmes from Wake Forest.
SMU has had an impressive transfer haul among other area colleges, with its 10 commits giving it the No.14 team transfer class per 247Sports.
Most recently, the Mustangs secured the transfer of former four-star running back LJ Johnson from Texas A&M. The redshirt freshman played sparingly in two seasons for the Aggies.
He was ranked in the top five running backs and top 10 Texas players in the class of 2021 out of Cypress, Texas, according to 247Sports.
Oklahoma has had a solid performance in the portal, with its class of five commits ranked No.16 in 247Sports’ transfer team rankings.
The fifth commit to the Sooners’ class was three-star safety Reggie Pearson, who spent the last two seasons as a starter at Texas Tech. He has 174 total tackles in his career, with four forced fumbles and three interceptions.
TCU has only secured four transfer commits, but that’s good enough to have its transfer class ranked No.19 by 247Sports.
The Horned Frogs may have picked up the most highly touted transfer of all area colleges by adding offensive lineman Tommy Brockermeyer, a former five-star recruit from Alabama.
It is a homecoming for Brockermeyer as he played his high school ball at Fort Worth’s All Saints.
Brockermeyer was the No.6 overall recruit in the nation for the class of 2021, according to 247Sports. He redshirted his lone season at Alabama, appearing only in two games.
Baylor had a quiet start to the portal period, with four of its five transfer additions committing in the last week.
With three nose tackles leaving the program, the Bears landed a commitment from Hutchinson Community College defensive tackle Jerrell Boykins Jr. who will be expected to take on a significant role. Boykins was a three-star recruit out of high school, according to 247 Sports.
Baylor will also welcome former four-star wide receiver Ketron Jackson from Arkansas. Jackson came out of Royse City High School as the 26th-best wide receiver in the nation for the 2020 class, according to 247 Sports.
The Bears added two transfers on the day of its Armed Forces Bowl loss. BYU graduate transfer offensive lineman Clark Barrington will join his brother Campbell, who transferred from BYU to Baylor on December 13.
The second Baylor transfer of the day was running back Dominic Richardson from Oklahoma State, who is expected to make an immediate impact with his two remaining years of eligibility.
He was highly touted coming out of Oklahoma City, ranking as the No.49 running back in the nation for the class of 2020 per 247Sports.
A couple of area colleges have struggled during the transfer portal period.
Texas A&M has seen an unprecedented 27 of its players enter the portal since the season’s end. The Aggies have managed to land only one transfer addition, though he is projected to be a future NFL draft pick.
Cornerback Tony Grimes, a former five-star recruit, who appeared in 37 games over three seasons with North Carolina, is joining Texas A&M next season.
Texas Tech and North Texas have both failed to land any transfers so far and have seen quarterbacks leave the program.
Texas Tech quarterback Donovan Smith announced Houston as his next college. Smith made five starts for the Red Raiders this season and threw for 1,505 yards and 12 touchdowns with a 3-2 record.
North Texas starting quarterback Austin Aune entered the transfer portal on December 22. Aune threw 33 touchdown passes as the North Texas starter in 2022, a school record.
At 29 years old, Aune will be 30 by the end of the next college football season. A two-sport star at Argyle High School, Aune chose baseball after being selected in the second round of the 2012 MLB Draft.
He would spend six seasons with the New York Yankees’ minor league system before joining the North Texas football team for the 2018 season.
