A Hays County inmate was shot and killed by a Hays County corrections officer after an alleged escape attempt.

The inmate now identified as 36-year-old Joshua Leon Wright was being treated at Ascension Seton Hays hospital in Kyle.

While reportedly attempting to escape the hospital, Wright assaulted the officer and ran through the emergency room according to the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.

The official fired at least one-shot striking Wright.

Medical personnel that were at the scene began life-saving treatment on Wright but were unsuccessful.

Wright was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was in jail for the charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, bail jumping, failure to appear, reckless driving, criminal mischief, and evading arrest and detention.

The Texas Rangers were called to assist and investigate according to the Hays County Sheriff’s Office while the corrections officer was placed on administrative leave. The Texas Rangers will be heading the investigation.
