Several Dallas-area teams were competing for spots in the semifinals of the Texas UIL football playoffs last week.
Below are recaps of quarterfinal games featuring Dallas-area schools.
Class 6A Division I
No.3 Duncanville 28, No.7 Spring Westfield 21
Duncanville junior running back Caden Durham rushed for 232 yards and all four Duncanville touchdowns to hold off Spring Westfield in the Class 6A Division I Region II final at Burkelbach Field in Georgetown.
An interception by Kadavion Dotson-Walker in the end zone with 3:39 remaining on a desperation fourth-and-9 pass sealed the win for Duncanville.
Duncanville (13-0) is advancing to the state semifinals for the fifth consecutive season and the seventh time in program history. Westfield (12-2), ranked No.7 in the AP state poll, was denied its fifth state semifinal appearance in program history.
No.10 Prosper 24, No.25 Lewisville 13
Prosper had been eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the last three playoffs, but it finally got over the hump, defeating Lewisville at McKinney ISD Stadium on Saturday to advance to the state semifinal.
The first half was a defensive battle that saw Prosper (13-1) go into the locker room up 10-7. Prosper’s offense scored 14 points in the second half to nab the win.
Senior linebacker Adam Due, a leader on Prosper’s prolific defense, which holds opponents to an average of 15 points per game, sparked his team with an interception at Lewisville’s 11-yard line.
That turnover set Prosper’s offense up for its first points since the first quarter. Lewisville (12-2) had three turnovers that contributed to the end of the school’s deepest playoff run since 1996 when it won the state championship.
Prosper is after only its second state championship, last winning a title in 2008.
Prosper will face Duncanville for a spot in the 6A Division I championship game.
Class 6A Division II
No.6 Denton Guyer 45, No.4 Southlake Carroll 21
Denton Guyer five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold had one of the most spectacular games of his illustrious career to lead his team to a rout of Southlake Carroll at Northwest ISD Stadium.
Arnold, an Oklahoma commit, threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 149 yards and four more scores.
Guyer, the Division II state runner-up in 2019 and 2021 and a state semifinalist in 2020, is after an elusive state championship, last winning a title in 2013.
Austin Westlake defeated Guyer (14-0) in its previous two trips to the state championship game, but Westlake is competing in the Division I bracket this season.
Carroll (13-1) was trying to win its first state championship since 2011 and was playing in a regional final for the sixth straight season.
No.13 DeSoto 60, Killeen Harker Heights 24
DeSoto senior running back Tre Wisner had 186 total yards and a touchdown, sparking a 20-0 start and a 33-point first quarter as DeSoto (12-2) routed Killeen Harker Heights (12-2) in the regional final Friday at McLane Stadium in Waco.
Wisner, a University of Texas commit, set the tone for DeSoto on the first play from scrimmage by taking a screen pass from Darius Bailey 75 yards for a touchdown.
DeSoto advances to the state-semifinal round for the fourth time in school history to face Denton Guyer.
Class 5A Division I
No.1 Longview 37, No.2 Mansfield Timberview 21
In a battle of the top two ranked teams in 5A Division I, Mansfield Timberview kept pace for over a half but ultimately was outmatched by Longview on Friday night at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
Longview junior running back Taylor Tatum showed why he has over 20 college offers, matching his career-high with five touchdowns to lead Longview to the quarterfinal victory over Timberview.
Timberview (13-1) finishes the season with a program record in wins, and only the 2011 season produced a deeper playoff run. Timberview can take some comfort in knowing the 21 points it scored were the most allowed by Longview all season.
Longview (14-0) will face 10-time state champion No.3 Aledo in the state semifinals.
Class 5A Division II
No.1 Argyle 35, Abilene Wylie 28
Argyle overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit with scores on four consecutive possessions in the second half to rally for a victory over Abilene Wylie (10-4) in the regional final Friday night at Tarleton State’s Memorial Stadium.
Junior quarterback John Gailey led the rally for Argyle (14-0), running for three second-half touchdowns.
With the win, Argyle is advancing to the state semifinals in its first year playing in Class 5A. Argyle is vying to return to a state championship game for the second time in three years, as they captured the Class 4A Division I state title in 2020.
No.8 South Oak Cliff 30, No.9 Melissa 16
South Oak Cliff kept its hopes of becoming the first-ever Dallas ISD team to win back-to-back state titles alive, bullying Melissa behind a powerful run game.
The defending 5A Division II champs ran for 213 yards on 46 carries to extend their winning streak to 11 games following an 0-3 start. Junior running back Danny Green led the SOC (11-3) backfield, rushing for 200 yards and three touchdowns.
Melissa (11-3), which had its 11-game winning streak snapped, was playing in a regional final for the second straight season and the fourth time in the last 12 years, but this is its first year competing in Class 5A. Melissa was trying to reach the state semifinals for the first time since 2011.
SOC will play No.1 Argyle in the state semifinals.
