Jason Robertson extended his conductive point streak to 14 games on Friday night against the Jets. The two goals from Robertson were not enough as Winnipeg scored with just over 30 seconds in the overtime period to take a 5-4 victory from the Stars.
Josh Morrissey put Dallas away in the extra frame at the American Airlines Center when he took a pass from teammate Blake Wheeler and slipped it past Stars netminder Jake Oettinger.
Robertson set a Stars record with at least a point in 14 consecutive games in the fast-paced first period as he earned an assist on Jamie Benn’s power-play goal. Robertson’s two late goals put him in first place in the NHL with 18, and the last six games, with eight goals and nine assists.
WHAT TO KNOW
A total of four goals were scored in the first seven minutes of the game, resulting in an early 2-2 tie. In the final nine minutes of Wednesday’s game, Dallas rallied from a 4-1 deficit to score five times and win.
Cole Perfetti scored on a backhand, and Harkins scored his first goal in six games since being recalled from the Manitoba Moose of the AHL for a 2-1 Winnipeg lead.
Wyatt Johnston and Benn scored the two goals that tied the game within 30 seconds of Winnipeg’s first two goals. With 12 minutes remaining, the Stars almost knotted the game again on the power play.
Jets’ goalie Connor Hellebuyck stopped Tyler Seguin’s stick attempt in the blue paint after Denis Gurianov’s shot from the right faceoff circle hit the left goalpost and rebounded to him.
Winnipeg won a challenge in the second period after Robertson’s shot from the right faceoff circle beat Hellebuyck. The initial ruling was a goal, but the replay revealed that the puck hit the net behind the goal before Robertson’s shot.
The replay room determined that Morrisey had collided with Hellebuyck and that there had been no contact with a Dallas player, allowing Robertson’s goal to stand.
BY THE NUMBERS
Johnston, a rookie, scored the first goal for the Stars.
Winnipeg goalie Hellebuyck made 37 saves. For Dallas, Oettinger stopped 23 shots.
Robertson broke a 28-year-old record for the Stars’ longest point streak, which Dave Gagner set in 1993-1994. His son, Jets center Sam Gagner, watched the passing of the torch firsthand. Brian Bellows set the franchise record with 20 goals in 1985-1986 when the Minnesota North Stars existed.
Benn’s power-play goal maintained the Stars’ status as the NHL’s top home power-play unit. In all games, only Colorado has a better power play than Dallas.
The Stars are 5-2-3 in their last 10 games.
Thursday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, the Jets watched the Dallas Cowboys defeat the New York Giants from a luxury suite.
WHAT THEY SAID
“It’s pretty clear for us when we watch the video and games we’ve played really well — the game we played at home against these guys (5-1 win on November 8), most of the Carolina game (4-3 overtime win on Monday), and a lot of other nights this year — and when we don’t play that way, we go into Minnesota and get smoked,” Morrissey told NHL. “If you need any evidence or reassurance that there is a certain way we have to play, that’s it right there.”
“We’ll take the point,” said Dallas coach Peter DeBoer. “These games right after Thanksgiving, right after Christmas, are easier to play on the road. You play at home, you have family in town, you have distractions, and we had some self-inflicted stuff tonight that is uncharacteristic of our group. Over an 82-game schedule, it’s an important point. That’s probably the silver lining.”
