Jason Robertson extended his point-scoring streak to 12 straight games on Monday night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. Still, the Stars fell 3-2 in a shootout after overtime to the visiting Avalanche.
Dallas came into the contest ranked in the top 10 in goals for, goals against, power play percentage, and penalty kill percentage but near the bottom of the league for penalty minutes with 191 ranking them 20th.
The hot start had the Stars with a three-point lead for first place in the Western Central over the Avalanche, but the loss drops Dallas to 11-5-3, good for 25 points, and a two-point lead over Colorado (11-5-1, 23 points) to maintain first place by two points in the Western Central.
WHAT TO KNOW
In the second period, Robertson got crossed checked into the goalie by Andreas Englund, pushing the net off its access. The play was reviewed for several minutes to see if Robertson snuck the puck across the goal line before the net was dislodged (and he went face-first into the left goal post).
The refs concluded that Avalanche goalie Alexandar Georgiev never had possession of the puck, and Robertson was awarded his 13th goal of the season, knotting the game at 1-1. Ty Dellandrea earned an assist on the play as a long pass up the ice and along the boards led Robertson toward the net.
Neither team scored in the overtime period, leading to a shootout that Colorado won 1-0 on a goal by Mikko Rantanen after Joe Pavelski and Tyler Seguin both failed to score in the extra frame.
BY THE NUMBERS
Dallas started the game 4-for-20 on the powerplay on home ice this season, and the Stars whiffed again on their first attempt against Colorado. Wyatt Johnston had a few sharp shots on goal as Dallas tallied six total shots on the powerplay, but Georgiev batted each one away.
The Stars outshot the Avalanche (19-18) and won 71% of the faceoffs heading into the third, but the score stayed tied 1-1 at the end of the second period.
Each team netted a goal in the third – Robertson picking up his second goal of the night and 14th of the season to tie the game at 2-2.
WHO SAID?
Robertson said to Bally Sports before the game: “I just think we need to limit our turnovers, you know, stay above their defensemen. They got a lot of moving parts, but if everyone checks really well, and we should be able to obtain that.”
Stars Coach Peter DeBoer said to NHL.com: “I thought through 40 minutes, pretty good game. Really even, both teams had chances. They kind of grabbed momentum there in the third, we made a few mistakes, obviously took some penalties. But found a way to get a point, so I guess that’s a silver lining. Always a good point when you’re playing the (defending) Stanley Cup champion.”
