The Sunny South Dallas Food Park debuted at Fair Park on Sunday. It is making a comeback after first being introduced this past spring.
In April, the food park originally took the form of the MLK Food Park, a pop-up food park on Martin Luther King Blvd, as reported by The Dallas Express. It then headed to Fair Park during the summer months until the end of July.
Do Right By The Streets (DRBTS), an urban planning and place creation group was responsible for the name change. Owner Desiree Powell stated, “The name change represents a new chapter of the Food Park’s growth as we continue expanding the vision of a permanent safe space at Fair Park.”
More than just food will be offered, as the website explains, “We are setting our sights on incorporating a business incubator with wellness elements, programming for teens/young adults.”
The food park is set to be open monthly on select Sundays from November 2022 to July 2023. They will have a break in the winter, and the dates are as follows: November 13, December 11, March 26, April 16, May 21, June 18, and July 30. Their hours are 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
DRBTS, along with the Texas Real Estate Council and Better Block, desired to “bring South Dallas residents together to gather in fellowship,” according to Powell.
The fair will have a variety of vendors, including Dallasized Cookies, Ba-Nom-a-Nom Pudding, Smith Spot BBQ, Happy Vegan, Royalty Soy Candles, Khristian’s Lemonade, The Cat Shack, and many more.
Some advocates suggest that food truck parks can be an effective way to help revitalize neighborhoods and bring business to little-visited or low-traffic areas.
Food trucks enjoy a vibrant environment in Dallas, with Klyde Warren Park hosting a well-attended park in the downtown area.
