Royal Caribbean has announced it is building what will become the world’s largest cruise ship, fully equipped with the largest waterpark at sea, set to sail year-round out of the port of Miami, Florida.
This new ship, dubbed the Icon of the Seas, will offer trips to Eastern and Western Caribbean destinations with 7-night stays aboard the ship. Caribbean destinations include stops at St. Kitts, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and the Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas called Perfect Day at CocoCay.
Parts of the 18-deck and 1,198-feet long ship will be designed with unique themes, including Thrill Island, Chill Island, Surfside, the Hideaway, and a nightclub called Aquadome. The new Icon will be able to hold up to 7,600 passengers.
Weighing over 250,600 tons, the ship will be 6% bigger than the current largest cruise ship, also owned by Royal Caribbean, the Wonder of the Seas, which has a maximum capacity of 7,084 passengers.
The ship is presently being constructed in Turku, Finland. Plans to build the vessel were approved prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed construction until June 2021.
The Icon will sail for its first cruise on January 27, 2024. Additional options for 7-night stays on the cruise ship will include routes to Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.
The most affordable option on the ship starts at $1,537 per person for a windowless interior cabin. Balcony cabins start at $1,958.
With sail dates coming up just over a year away, bookings opened up to all customers on Tuesday.
