The Red Bird Mall is now occupied by the Parkland Hospital branch called the Parkland Charles Victor Roman Clinic.

The new clinic is named after African American medical practitioner Dr. Charles Victor Roman, who was a physician in Dallas from 1893-1904.

Parkland Hospital CEO Dr. Fred Cerise stated, “Dr. Roman was a pioneer in the American healthcare community who spoke out against racial injustice and urged people of all races and ethnicities to work together.”

According to the county’s health care assessment, the neighborhoods near the Red Bird Mall did not have sufficient access to medical facilities, which led to the establishment of the new clinic.

The Parkland Foundation CEO Michael Horne said, “It really is a testament to philanthropy and certainly our public dollars coming together to ensure that more individuals have access to high-quality healthcare.”

The clinic has replaced what was once a Dillard’s store in the mall. Similarly, a UT Southwestern Medical Center has taken over a space that belonged to Sears for over 45 years.

The mall is seemingly becoming a hub for healthcare, and there are plans for a Children’s Medical Center to open offices there as well.

President of the Red Bird Development Group, Peter Brodsky, said that the plan “has always been to convert what used to be a 100% retail into a mixed-use development.” Along those lines, there is also a move to construct a mid-rise residential community.

Brodsky bought the Red Bird Mall seven years ago and started converting big department stores into office buildings.

The entire second floor of the mall is now filled with offices, with over 1,600 people coming to work at the mall daily, which is giving the retail and food businesses more foot traffic.

Brodsky calls the mall a “real live-work-play-environment with more to come.”
