“The murder rate in my city is going up,” Antywon Dillard rapped just months before he was murdered. “S–t is tragic.”

Known socially in South Dallas and to his fans as BFG Straap, Dillard, 22, made that declaration in front of Jerry’s Market on the corner of North Westmoreland and Bernal Drive.

The lyric was from his music video “Outta Love,” posted to YouTube last year.

Dillard and an acquaintance — 26-year-old Corey Lucian, AKA Cutter 900 — died from multiple gunshot wounds 10 miles east of Jerry’s in the 2800 block of Casey Street, near South Malcolm X Boulevard in District 7, on September 22, The Dallas Express reported.

Dillard and Lucian’s murders allegedly followed a fight that broke out on Casey Street in South Dallas, a location Dillard was known to frequent, End of Sentence reported.

The Dallas Police Department has not identified a suspect in the murders or a possible motive for the killings.

As more and more Dallas residents report assaults in 2022 and violent crimes increase in the city from month to month, it should come as little surprise that homicides in the region are up, reaching 10 last month.

Three of the 10 homicide cases in Dallas during September took place in Dallas District 7.

District 7 is led by Councilman Adam Bazaldua. The neighborhood saw a 14% crime score decrease compared to September 2021 but accounted for over 30% of all Dallas homicides.

The Dallas Express reached out to Bazaldua to see if there were any updates to the homicides in that district, but no response was submitted.

Aside from the three homicides in D7, the remaining September 2022 homicides occurred in the following districts:

  • Districts 8, 13, two each.
  • Districts 2, 9, and 14, one each.

The Dallas Express, The People’s Paper, believes that important information about the city, such as crime rates and trends, should be easily accessible to you. Dallas has more crime per capita than hotspots like Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and New York, according to data from the FBI’s UCR database.
