Below will be recaps of some of the biggest games from Week 8 featuring DFW-area teams ranked in the Texas state high school football rankings:
6A:
No.3 Duncanville 38, Mansfield 3
Duncanville (6-0, 4-0), the highest-ranked DFW-area team in 6A, showed why they are so highly ranked with a convincing victory over previously undefeated Mansfield in a District 11-6A showdown.
The victory is Duncanville’s 39th consecutive in district play, a stretch that began late in the 2016 campaign.
Mansfield (6-1, 3-1), off to its best start since 2011, could only muster 52 yards of offense in the first half. Its only points came courtesy of a 38-yard field goal by Jacob Hand on the first half’s final play to make it 24-3 at halftime.
Meanwhile, Duncanville needed only 46 seconds to get on the board, striking when senior cornerback Lamodrick Spencer intercepted a tipped pass near the left sideline and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown and a sudden 7-0 lead.
Offensively for Duncanville, four-star junior running back Caden Durham had a big night, rushing eight times for 142 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Dakorien Moore, the No.1 Texas prospect for the Class of 2025, according to 247Sports, had five catches for 114 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown catch and run.
Duncanville and Mansfield had evenly split the previous eight meetings, but Duncanville has now taken the last two matchups convincingly by a combined score of 98-17.
No.9 Allen 31, McKinney 28
After five-straight victories, all won by double digits, Allen (6-1, 4-0 District 5-6A) had to force a McKinney turnover on downs with 1:32 left in the fourth quarter to eke out its sixth consecutive win.
McKinney (5-2, 3-1), which has not defeated Allen since 1999, took the lead on three occasions in the second half, but Allen responded with a score of its own each time.
Allen led 10-7 at halftime, but McKinney recovered an onside kick to open the third quarter and took the lead 12 plays later on a 15-yard touchdown pass from SMU commit Keldric Luster to junior Khali Best to take a 14-10 lead.
Allen’s junior running back Kayvion Sibley scored three touchdowns, two rushing, and a third on a 16-yard screen pass from four-star quarterback Michael Hawkins in the third that regained a 17-14 advantage.
Best gave McKinney the lead again on a 75-yard touchdown run to give the visitors a 21-17 advantage in the third. After Allen again retook the lead, Luster scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 8:19 left in the game to give McKinney a 28-24 lead.
Hawkins threw Allen’s final go-ahead touchdown pass on a 26-yard throw to five-star sophomore tight end Davon Mitchell with 5:10 left in the fourth quarter.
5A Division I:
No.4 Aledo 64, Burleson Centennial 21
Last week, Burleson Centennial got to 6-0 for the first time in program history by snapping Denton Ryan’s 42-game district winning streak, a run that had started in 2014. On Friday, Centennial was trying to end another historic win streak but had no luck.
Centennial (6-1, 4-1 District 3-5A-I) was thoroughly outmatched by perennial powerhouse Aledo, which came into the week with a national-record 108-game district winning streak that began in 2007.
Aledo (6-2, 6-0) quarterback Hauss Hejny accounted for 425 yards and six touchdowns as his team rolled to the win on the road.
Centennial kept pace early, with both teams tied at 14 at the end of the first quarter. But Aledo began to run away in the second quarter, with Hejny hitting Jalen Pope from 32 yards to give Aledo a 21-14 lead midway through the second quarter. Hejny then added a 52-yard touchdown run to make it 28-14 at halftime.
Hejny connected with Gavin Olenjack twice early in the third quarter, from 42 and 76 yards, to put Aledo up 42-21 with 8:45 left in the period. Aledo’s lead ballooned to 64-21 early in the fourth, thanks to three touchdown runs.
Aledo will stay on the road in Week 9 to play new district rival, Denton Ryan. The two football powers were placed into the same district for the first time after February’s biennial realignment.
5A Div. II:
No.1 Argyle 24, Frisco Emerson 10
Stout defensive play powered Argyle past Frisco Emerson in a battle of unbeaten teams at Toyota Stadium.
Argyle (7-0, 3-0 District 3-5A-II) had 17 tackles for loss and held Emerson to its lowest point total of the year, its previous low coming in a 32-12 win over Woodrow Wilson. This was the first-ever loss for Emerson (7-1, 3-1), a first-year program.
Argyle was also held to its lowest scoring total of the season, with its previous low coming in a 30-14 win over Lake Dallas.
Both teams also finished the game with their backup quarterback. Argyle starting quarterback Jacob Robinson appeared to suffer a right-leg injury with 2:48 left in the second quarter and did not return. Emerson’s starting quarterback Darryl Shelton was shaken up after taking a hit late in the second quarter and did not return.
Argyle took the lead for good when backup quarterback John Gailey scored a touchdown on a one-yard sneak to make it 14-7 in the second quarter. Gailey had 125 of his 140 total yards of offense in the first half.
Carter Buxton connected on a 28-yard field goal with 6:45 left in the second quarter to extend Argyle’s lead to 17-7, which it kept through halftime.
Argyle made its lead more comfortable when Parker Phillips recovered an errant punt snap in the end zone for a touchdown with 7:07 left in the third quarter to give Argyle a 24-7 lead.
