Tuesday morning ushered in Texas’ first touch of cold so far this fall, with temps in the 40s before slowly rising to the 60s by mid-afternoon, and the end of the week is expected to bring even colder temperatures.
With winds expected to pick up to a consistent 10-15 mph, temperatures are expected to drop below 39 degrees Wednesday, forcing a freeze warning to be issued by the National Weather Service from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday for counties east and north of D-FW.
Temperatures usually do not fall this low until mid-November, but meteorologists are seeing cold fronts approaching much earlier than usual.
To prepare for the incoming cold front, those who live east and north of the DFW metroplex may want to consider protecting plants that are vulnerable to the cold weather, as temps will likely hold around 39 and 40 degrees through most of the metroplex.
Luckily for those who do not enjoy the cold weather, the temperatures in the area are expected to climb back to the upper 70s by Thursday afternoon. Thereafter, Friday and the weekend in North Texas will see highs in the mid-80s, with possible thunderstorms and showers dropping by early next week.
The Farmer’s Almanac predicted a harsh winter following record-setting summer heat. Maintaining its reputation since 1818, the almanac has been accurate in its forecasts about 85% of the time.
After last year’s historic freeze and devastating power-grid failure, similarly cold winter weather may be approaching in the early 2022–2023 season, earlier than ever.
This year’s almanac forecast warns Texans to brace for a cold and “icy” winter with normal precipitation throughout North Texas, with the expectation of snow and ice storms throughout the season.
Texas should expect heavy snowfall in the north the first week of January, followed by “significant snows” for both North and Central Texas the second week.
It is worth noting that the almanac predicted heavy snow for much of Texas during February 2021, and we received freezing temperatures on Valentine’s Day weekend, right on time.
Regarding February 2023, the Farmers’ Almanac has again predicted some snow during the first couple of weeks for Texas and a “stormy holiday weekend” following Valentine’s Day.
