Several food chains and companies are providing free desserts and special offers on Friday to celebrate National Dessert Day.

National Dessert Day is part of the many nationwide “holidays” devoted to food, such as National Pizza Day (November 12) and the federally-created National Ice Cream Day (May 17). National Dessert Day was created by National Today, owned by the digital agency PR Hacker.

“We are the ones who made a lot of these holidays (popular),” National Today CEO Ben Kaplan explained. “We’ll have an obscure holiday no one knows about. We’ll get 100 influencers and 100 TV stations and a million people on social media to celebrate it like it’s a huge day.”

National Today has worked with Budweiser for National Drink Beer Day (September 28), Finlandia Cheese for National Waffle Day (August 24), and Milk-Bone for National Dog Day (August 26), among others. It’s a little self-serving, but Kaplan says it’s also fun for casual readers.

While National Dessert Day is certainly not a religious or bank holiday, it’s a perfect excuse to benefit from companies’ free or cheap promotional deals.

There are many different places reportedly extending offers to customers, and a few notable chains with locations in Dallas have the following deals.

At Potbelly Sandwich Shop, Potbelly Perks members can score a free Dream Bar or cookie with the purchase of any entrée.

McAlister’s Deli is offering buy-one-get-one-free desserts for loyalty members. Every dessert is up for grabs with the code “DESSERT1014.”

At Wendy’s, for a one-dollar donation, you can get a coupon book that gives you five free junior Frostys. Plus, you’ll be supporting the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

Alternatively, people looking to celebrate could also try crafting their own sweet treats at home to share with friends and family.
