Gift baskets, cheese boards, and other cheese-related products are part of a recall due to a listeria outbreak that has potentially caused at least six people to fall ill, CBS DFW reports.
The Des Moines, Iowa-based company Hy-Vee was notified by another company, Old Europe Cheese, that some of their products might contain contaminated cheese.
Eight Hy-Vee products in total have been recalled, and Old Europe Cheese also issued a recall on some of their items as well, including their brie and camembert cheese.
Hy-Vee, which has 280 retail locations across eight states, including Illinois, Missouri, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, is recalling products with best-by dates ranging from Sept. 28 to Dec. 14.
Some of the potentially tainted products include Cranberry Brie Torte, Apricot Brie Torte, Triple Creme Brie, Montamore Cheddar, Bon Appetite Gift Basket, and Deluxe Delights Gift Basket.
The company said people bringing in those products will receive a full refund. Although some people have seemingly contracted listeria, Hy-Vee suggested that “No illnesses have been reported to Hy-Vee” specifically since learning of the possible contamination.
The federal Food and Drug Administration warned against eating any recalled cheese. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates thousands of Americans become sick from listeriosis and more than 200 die every year.
Some of the symptoms of listeriosis include severe headaches, stomach pain, and high fever. Particularly susceptible are young children and the elderly. It can even cause birthing complications such as miscarriages and stillbirths.
Listeria infections have been reported recently in states such as Texas, California, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, and New Jersey.
