Target and Walmart will hire thousands of workers this holiday season.

Target announced Thursday that it will begin hiring up to 100,000 seasonal employees for the end-of-year shopping season, the same number of holiday workers it hired the previous year.

Walmart, which hired 150,000 seasonal staff in 2021, announced Tuesday that the company would only be hiring 40,000 employees to meet this year’s holiday demand.

Target is offering season employees a starting wage between $15 and $24 an hour. New hires will be brought on after existing employees have set their holiday schedules, according to the Minnesota-based retailer.

Walmart did not specify what starting wage it would offer its seasonal employees, but Senior Vice President Maren Waggoner stated in a corporate blog post that the Arkansas-based retailer would be welcoming associates “in a variety of seasonal and full-time roles.” These job roles include “seasonal store associates,” “full-time truck drivers,” and “customer care associates.”

Customer care associates at Walmart will operate in the retailer’s call centers this holiday season, according to the company. Walmart’s call centers are located in Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Orlando, Phoenix, Northwest Arkansas, and Draper, Utah.

Despite plans to hire thousands of seasonal workers for the fast-approaching holiday shopping season, sales growth for most major retailers is expected to fall short of past growth metrics, given the economic backdrop and the inflationary pressures bearing down on budget-conscious consumers.

Many retailers have also resorted to steep markdowns in order to move excess inventory. Both Walmart and Target faced the issue of excess inventory back in June, particularly in the category of “non-essential” big-box items, as previously reported in The Dallas Express.
