The North Richland Hills Police Department welcomed a new K-9 to the force and has given him a creative but familiar name.

Luka “Dogcic,” named after Dallas Mavericks superstar point guard Luka Doncic, is a one-year-old Belgian Malinois from Holland. The newest member of the force was introduced in a Facebook post by North Richland Hills PD on Tuesday.

Luka and his handler Officer Matt Boyd spent six weeks training in the Texas Hill Country, which involved narcotic detection and patrol work, according to the post.

The “crime-fighting duo” had a successful first night on the job, resulting “in the successful apprehension of a fleeing suspect who was found in a trunk,” North Richland Hills PD said.

Luka is taking over for K-9 Breta, whose tenure came to a close. A private donor covered most of the costs of replacing K-9 Breta.

“The department extends its most sincere thanks and appreciation for the abundant gift,” read the post.

Luka Dogcic is in good hands with his handler, especially since the social media post noted that Officer Boyd is a huge Mavericks fan.
