A 5-year-old girl drowned in the Rio Grande, Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said Tuesday.
The girl was reportedly attempting to cross the river to unlawfully enter Texas with her mother on Monday. The institute said the two were from Central America but did not specify the country.
The mother told rescuers she was holding her daughter, but the current swept her out of her arms.
The child’s body was found downstream near Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso.
Four other unlawful migrants from South America were also found trapped in the river nearby and rescued.
The identities of the unlawful migrants were not disclosed.
