Rowlett police recovered the body of a dead infant boy in the midst of a standoff Friday.

In a statement obtained by The Dallas Express, Rowlett PD said they responded to a welfare call at 7:00 p.m. Friday. The caller reported she was concerned that her husband, a male aged 48, was behaving strangely and that their infant child was in his care.

Officers arrived at the location at the 3000 block of Silver Springs Way and made brief contact with the suspect. Communication soon stopped, and subsequent attempts to contact him via cellphone, home phone, and long-range acoustic device proved unsuccessful.

Officers entered the garage and recovered the unresponsive 8-month-old child from a seat in a parked car. Police administered CPR, and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Medical Examiner has not yet ruled on the cause of death, and an investigation is pending.

After the suspect’s wife told police that the suspect could be armed, officers set up a perimeter in the neighborhood and evacuated surrounding houses. At this point, Rowlett Police officers also requested that Rowlett Police SWAT, Rowlett Police CNT (negotiators) & Rowlett Police Containment team respond to the scene.

As contact had failed, officers deployed what the Rowlett Police Department described as “chemical irritants.”

At 2 a.m. the following morning, SWAT entered the residence where the suspect was located and taken into custody. Authorities say that the suspect refused to surrender and assaulted three officers, who were treated at a local hospital and have since been released.

The suspect was also hospitalized with a non-life threatening injury and has been arrested. The suspect is detained at the hospital and has not been booked in Rowlett City Jail. Until he is transferred to jail, authorities will not release his name.

The arrested individual was charged with one count of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury and three counts of assaulting a peace officer.
