An alleged gunman is dead after police intervened at a Baylor Scott & White hospital Wednesday night, Irving Police Department announced.
The department posted a tweet to their social media just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday evening that they had the area around the Baylor Scott & White Hospital at 1901 North MacArthur Boulevard blocked off for an officer-involved shooting.

34-year-old Michael McPhail had gone to the hospital that evening, as a patient, around 7 p.m., Irving Police Department stated in a release. He was waiting in the emergency room and had a handgun in his possession.
A hospital staff member told police that McPhail was “acting unusual” and noticed the weapon in his possession. The staff member called the hospital police to investigate.
An Irving Police Department officer at the hospital for an unrelated reason was asked by Baylor Scott & White Staff members to assist in the intervention.
While the officers were talking to McPhail in his room, he allegedly fired a gunshot into the air. At that point, the officers called for backup. When the additional Irving Police Department officers arrived, they say McPhail fired in their direction.
The officers returned fire, striking and killing McPhail.
No other injuries were reported.
Three officers involved in the incident have been placed on leave while the department conducts the investigation.
“We appreciate the swift response of the Irving Police Department, who are still on site this evening. Patient care is continuing normally,” the hospital said in a statement to local media.
Police said at a press conference Thursday that McPhail has a criminal record but has not interacted with Irving Police Department.
No motive for McPhail’s actions has been released.
“Body-worn camera[s are] being reviewed,” Officer Robert Reeves said during a press conference. “The investigators are working the case. So those specifics we’re not going to get into releasing at this time.”
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Irving Police Department at (972) 273-1010 or by email at [email protected].
