A big Texas ranch and known outlaw hideout is for sale. The S&S Ranch is located about 80 miles west of Fort Worth and sprawls over 2,600 acres in Palo Pinto County.
The S&S Ranch land is located near Possum Kingdom Lake, a popular vacation spot, and is currently used for hunting and grazing cattle.
“The property includes a historic stone home, and a stone wall thought to be from an old Texaco camp,” said Steve Sikes of Texas Ranches Real Estate, which is marketing the property. “Furthermore, Sam Bass Hollow runs through this ranch.”
Sikes said the historic outlaw and train robber Sam Bass used the ranch as a hideout, and according to legend, you may be able to find his money hidden somewhere on the property.
Texas Ranches Real Estate and Burt Ladner Realty Estate are currently pursuing buyers for the property that includes cattle pens, stock tanks, and roadways through the land.
“By my estimate, the ranch is capable of easily running 105 to 130 head of cattle without overgrazing,” Sikes said. “The terrain has great elevation and offers several places for home sites.”
The S&S Ranch is the latest in a string of rural properties to hit the market in the past year. According to Texas A&M’s Texas Real Estate Research Center, rural land sales hit a record high last year. Over 846,000 rural acres changed hands in 2021, up 53% from 2020.
“There were 9,055 Texas land sales in 2021,” Dr. Charles Gilliland, a research economist with the Texas Real Estate Research Center, said. “This continues to be the most active period in Texas land market history.”
