An eight-year-old girl from Mesquite was involved in a fatal accident near North Beltline Road on May 11.

Authorities said a passing 2009 Ford E250 van hit the girl in the 400 block of Feather Crest Lane at about 7:45 p.m. She was struck as she ran to cross the street to a waiting vehicle. According to a news release by Mesquite Police Department, the department received calls about a traffic accident. Officers were dispatched to the scene at about 7:45 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers found the girl had been badly injured. She was transported to a local hospital, where she later passed.

Police did not release the identity of the eight-year-old girl.

Mesquite Police Department, via the news release, sent condolences and prayers to the families of “everyone involved” in the incident, which the department referred to as “a heartbreaking tragedy.”

Police said the driver of the van was uninjured and stayed at the scene after the accident. No criminal charges have been filed against him. It is unclear if the police intend to charge the driver with any crime.
