State Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Dallas) is speaking out against a state law that allows individuals to carry firearms without any documentation such as a permit or a license.
“Permitless carry is a policy failure—and even Gov. Abbott knows it. It’s nothing but a distraction from the real issues we’re facing in Texas: A failing grid, a failing voting system and a failing justice system,” Crockett said in a Twitter post.
On June 17, Gov. Greg Abbott signed seven pieces of legislation into law surrounding Second Amendment rights in Texas, as detailed in a press release by Gov. Abbott’s office.
One of the most controversial bills he signed was House Bill 1927, which authorizes Constitutional carry in Texas, meaning law-abiding Texans can legally carry a handgun without a license to carry, as detailed in the bill’s language in a press release by Gov. Abbott’s office.
“Politicians from the federal level to the local level have threatened to take guns from law-abiding citizens — but we will not let that happen in Texas,” Abbott said in a press release. “Texas will always be the leader in defending the Second Amendment, which is why we built a barrier around gun rights this session. These seven laws will protect the rights of law-abiding citizens and ensure that Texas remains a bastion of freedom. Thank you to the Texas Legislature for getting these bills to my desk.”
A Texas Tribune poll conducted along with the University of Texas shows that 56% of Republicans support permitless carry while 85% of Democrats are against it, as described in the poll’s data on the Texas Tribune website.
