According to court records, the man who shot a Denton police officer in 2019 was sentenced to life in prison, plus an additional 35 years.
On March 31, Antwon Pinkston was found guilty of two counts of assault on a peace officer.
Police Officer Urban Rodriguez Jr. was shot twice by Pinkston, once in the head and the leg, during a traffic stop on October 29, 2019.
The incident has caused Rodriguez Jr. to undergo surgery, leaving him with lasting injuries.
Rodriguez Jr. pulled Pinkston over for a defective equipment violation and expired registration. Pinkston’s vehicle had a female passenger. Just as rookie officer Randy Cole came to assist Rodriguez Jr., Pinkston opened fire. Cole shot back at Pinkston, but Rodriguez was shot in the head and leg.
Officers from Carrollton and Farmers Branch found the two suspects at a fuel station near Luna Road and Valley View Lane in Carrollton. Initially, Pinkston was detained on charges of attempted murder of a police officer, and a parole violation led to the passenger’s arrest.
A Denton County jury sentenced Pinkston to life in prison on April 11 for shooting Rodriguez Jr. and an additional 35 years in jail for endangering Officer Cole during the same traffic encounter.
