Plano’s highly competitive summer internship program will open for registration on Tuesday, February 1. Mayor John Muns is leading the 2022 internship program, which is intended to help students transition to college and into the workforce.
The deadline to apply is March 1 or until the first four hundred applicants apply, whichever comes first. Each intern will work twenty to forty hours a week, receiving ten dollars an hour while working hands-on with some of the nation’s leading companies, non-profits, and government offices. Interns are expected to work in the automotive, aviation operations, education, logistics, marketing, and medical industries. Internships will take place remotely as well as in person.
This year, Muns said there would be an increase in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students and students identified as first-generation college students, as reported by The Dallas Morning News.
The 2022 Summer Intern Program will run from June 6 through July 29. Applicants must be sixteen or older by June 13, 2022, and have classification as a rising junior or senior. Prospective interns must attend a Plano school or live within the Plano city limits, hold a 3.0-grade point average, have a good attendance record, and work throughout the entire internship period. Organizations wishing to participate in the Plano Mayor’s Summer Internship Program can help in several ways, including hosting students during an eight-week paid internship, underwriting an internship at a local non-profit or government agency, or becoming a program sponsor.
The Plano Mayor’s Summer Internship program started in 2014 and has since provided 600 paid internships for Plano high school students.
Through the program, companies are able to invest in the future workforce, while students who participate gain real-world experience, witnessing first-hand how Plano’s small and large companies, non-profits, and governmental agencies play a big part in the global economy.
