The medical examiner has released the autopsy results of a UNT student fatally shot by Denton Police two years ago.
According to FOX 4 News, Darius Tarver’s toxicology results indicated no alcohol or drugs were present in his system at the time of his death.
The shooting occurred in the early hours of January 21, 2020, after police were called to an apartment complex and reportedly found Tarver acting erratically while holding a cleaver and a frying pan.
The incident took place at The Forum at Denton Station Apartments. The apartment complex near Interstate 35E and Fort Worth Drive is mainly occupied by college students.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Denton Police Chief Frank Dixon revealed that several 911 calls came in around 3 a.m. on the day the shooting occurred, claiming that a man was yelling, breaking light fixtures, and banging on apartment doors with a frying pan.
“He was described as going crazy up in a breezeway, knocking out a series of lights in a hallway, banging on doors and attempting to make entry into a number of apartments,” Chief Dixon said, according to FOX 4 News.
Responding officers found Tarver, 22, still carrying the frying pan and meat cleaver. Officers tried to communicate with Tarver and ordered him to drop the weapons. Tarver allegedly ignored the orders and charged at the officers, stabbing one of them in the shoulder.
The officers used a taser on Tarver twice in an attempt to stop him, but he got up and charged at the officers before another officer fired several shots at him. Tarver was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
