Texans are preparing for storms today and tomorrow, which could bring hail and potential flooding.

Gov. Greg Abbott activated emergency response resources on November 18, ahead of potential severe weather beginning on November 19, according to a press release.

“Texas stands ready to deploy all emergency resources needed to help local communities across the state prepare and respond to severe weather,” Abbott said in the release. “Texans are urged to check local weather reports and road conditions and have an emergency plan for themselves and their families.”

The National Weather Service is predicting heavy rainfall and an increased risk of flash flooding starting on November 19 in Texas. Meteorologists predict the storm will then head east, toward the Ozarks.

Storm chances are increasing specifically near the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex beginning November 19, especially in the evening and overnight, according to NWS-Fort Worth. Some large hail and heavy rain are possible.

“Remember, never cross flooded roads,” the agency warned.

NWS-Fort Worth also predicted showers and storms to continue all day on November 20, with the main concerns being heavy rainfall, isolated flooding, and strong winds.

The storm system risks flash flooding, damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes – especially in West, North, Central, Southwest, and East Texas – through the end of the week, according to Abbott’s office. Officials encouraged Texans to monitor local forecasts.

In preparation for potential severe weather, Abbott activated the Texas National Guard, the Texas Division of Emergency Management, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Texas Department of Transportation, State Health Services, the Public Utility Commission, the Railroad Commission, and the Commission on Environmental Quality.

The governor also activated Texas A&M Task Force 1 – with swiftwater rescue boats – and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service to support agricultural and livestock needs.

Abbott’s office urged Texans to prepare by creating an emergency plan, assembling essential supplies, and listening to local officials.

“Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” Abbott said. “The safety of all Texans is our No. 1 priority.”

Next week, the NWS-Fort Worth is predicting another storm system will arrive on November 23.

“We are monitoring a potential for heavy rain with this system,” officials posted. “Timing and specific details will be refined in the coming days, but the most likely timing right now shows rain tapering off by Thanksgiving.”
