The month of October was marred by more than a dozen murders in the city of Dallas, according to cases documented by the Dallas Police Department’s media relations team.

Two separate incidents on October 26 led to the deaths of two individuals, one involving a firearm and the other by stabbing, bringing the total documented homicides for the month to 14.

At approximately 1:40 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance in the 2900 block of Canton Street. According to a preliminary report, an unknown victim was stabbed by a suspect during an altercation following a vehicle crash near the intersection of South Malcolm X Boulevard and Canton Street. The victim was transported to a hospital by Dallas Fire-Rescue, where he died. A suspect was arrested at the scene but was later released. The victim has not been publicly identified.

Hours later, at about 6 p.m., police responded to a shooting call at the intersection of Elam Road and North Jim Miller Road. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Two days later, police publicly identified the victim as 41-year-old Steven Baisy. On October 29, 42-year-old Montray Bynum turned himself in to U.S. Marshals and was subsequently charged with murder in connection with the case. Police have not commented on a motive for the shooting.

The Dallas Police Department continues to be hampered by a chronic shortage of police officers, and the city has yet to meet the standards mandated by Dallas voters through Proposition U last year. The measure requires the City to maintain a police force of 4,000 sworn officers and to provide the force with a pay and benefits package that ranks among the top five in the metroplex for cities with populations over 50,000.
