The University Interscholastic League voted to ban foreign exchange students from competing in varsity-level sports at Texas high schools beginning with the 2026–27 school year, NewsRadio 1080 KRLD reported. The decision was approved at the UIL’s annual legislative council meeting, replacing current rules that allow varsity participation if eligibility requirements are met.

UIL said the change is aimed at maintaining fairness and competitive balance and would align Texas with policies in other states. The rule will take effect statewide unless the Texas Education Agency or state lawmakers intervene, while some districts have raised concerns that it could discourage international exchange programs.
