M.C.I. Foods, Inc. recalled about 91,585 pounds of ready-to-eat breakfast burritos and wraps over possible Listeria contamination, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The Santa Fe Springs, California, company produced frozen breakfast products between September 17 and October 14. The recall involves items containing egg that may carry Listeria monocytogenes.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall after M.C.I. Foods reported a positive test result for Listeria in the scrambled egg component. The company discovered the issue during routine sampling and testing of ingredients from external suppliers.

M.C.I. Foods shipped the recalled items nationwide to food service institutions, including schools. The Los Cabos, El Más Fino, and Midamar brand products appear in the USDA’s National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.

According to FSIS, the affected foods include El Más Fino’s Egg, Ham, and Cheese Breakfast Burrito; El Más Fino’s Egg, Sausage, and Cheese Breakfast Burrito; Los Cabos’ Egg, Cheese, Potato, and Cooked Sausage Crumbles Wrap; and Midamar’s Egg, Cheese, and Beef with Sausage Seasoning Wrap.

Each product displays the establishment number “EST. 1162A” or “P-5890A” inside the USDA mark of inspection. Officials confirmed no illnesses in connection with the products.

The agency urged institutions to stop serving the items and to discard any recalled product.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in institutional refrigerators or freezers,” the agency stated. “Institutions are urged not to serve these products. These products should be thrown away.”

Listeriosis, the illness caused by Listeria monocytogenes, mainly affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, or premature delivery.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranks Listeria infection as the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States. The CDC estimates that about 1,250 people contract the infection each year.
