The Dallas Mavericks have signed head coach Jason Kidd to a multiyear contract extension, reinforcing their confidence in his leadership as the franchise enters a new era.

Although details about the extension have not been released, the expectation is that this deal will keep Kidd in Dallas for the foreseeable future after an impressive coaching tenure with the franchise.

Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison applauded the work done by Kidd during his time and said the difference maker is Kidd’s ability to develop players and relationships off the court.

“J-Kidd’s basketball resume is one of the best in the game, and through every situation he has proven he’s the right person to lead the Mavericks,” he said, per NBA.com.

“He has a track record of developing some of the best talent in the league, as well as the ability to connect with players to bring out the best version of themselves.”

Kidd enters his fifth season as the Mavericks’ head coach after guiding the organization through roster upheavals, playoff runs, and high-profile trades.

Despite struggling during his first few head coaching tenures, Kidd has solidified himself as one of the most effective head coaches in the NBA, accumulating a record of 179-149 during his four seasons with the franchise.

These years have also included multiple deep playoff runs, including a trip to the 2022 Western Conference Finals in his first season with the team and a run to the NBA Finals in 2024.

As a whole, Kidd has collected a record of 362-339, with the Hall of Famer also spending time coaching the Milwaukee Bucks and the Brooklyn Nets during the early portion of his coaching career.

Dallas will now enter the 2025-26 regular season with high expectations for this roster, as the team is expected to compete for an NBA Championship once All-Star guard Kyrie Irving returns from a torn ACL.

Before Irving’s return to the court, Dallas will rely heavily on rookie forward Cooper Flagg, whom the Mavericks selected with the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Flagg has been heralded as one of the best rookies to enter the NBA this decade, with league general managers recently voting him as the most likely player to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award this season, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.

The Mavericks will look to get off to a hot start to the season, with the team taking on the San Antonio Spurs in the opening game of the year on October 22 at American Airlines Center.
