The Food and Drug Administration has expanded its cinnamon recall to 16 brands following tests that revealed elevated lead levels, making the spice potentially unsafe for consumption.

The expansion adds HAETAE, Roshni, Durra, and Wise Wife to a dozen other ground cinnamon products flagged earlier this year. The agency verified the findings through state testing and urged consumers to toss any matching items from their pantries.

“The FDA is continuing to analyze cinnamon and review sample results received from state partners who have been continuously sampling ground cinnamon at retail for elevated levels of lead,” the alert reads.

The probe traces back to 2023, when children’s applesauce pouches were pulled due to high lead levels. Cinnamon emerged as the culprit by early 2024, prompting summer warnings and ongoing updates. Products have long shelf lives, so many may linger in homes. While 10 brands have formally recalled their cinnamon products, the FDA was unable to contact Haetae for a voluntary pull.

Health Risks

Lead, a heavy metal found in trace amounts in foods like dark chocolate, poses significant health risks to children. Even low exposure can harm brain development, attention, IQ, and school performance, per the American Academy of Pediatrics. Long-term effects linger.

Kids may first show symptoms such as headache, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, or constipation. Worsening signs include clumsiness, agitation, drowsiness, vomiting, or convulsions — a medical emergency signaling central nervous system impact.

Adults may experience kidney problems, high blood pressure, and cognitive issues over time, the FDA says. No illnesses have surfaced from these products as of September. If symptoms appear after use, see a doctor.

The FDA advised against buying the items and told owners to discard them immediately to avoid lead buildup from blood exposure. An investigation into more brands continues.
