The Dallas Express CEO Chris Putnam sat down with legendary Southern Methodist University running backs Eric Dickerson and Craig James — known together as the “Pony Express” — for the latest episode of Putnam’s Perspective, produced in partnership with Dallas Sports Network. The conversation revisited their SMU legacy and enduring friendship.

The two football icons reflected on their decades-long friendship, the legacy of their SMU days, and their recent Pony Express Award recognition.

James said the award carried deep meaning given the modern college football landscape. “Absolutely — in this ‘Me’ era, having a ‘We’ award was something that we thought was outstanding,” he said. “Eric and I have been friends for almost 50 years, and the thing that we really enjoy is our friendship.”

Dickerson echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the enduring bond between the pair. “For me, it means a lot. We’ve been friends for over 40-something years since we met in college — even before we met in college,” Dickerson said. He recalled how James once traveled to his hometown of Sealy, Texas, during recruiting — a gesture that left a lasting impression.

“A lot of people think that you play together and kind of forget about each other,” Dickerson said. “People are really shocked that we’re still friends after all these years — playing together, playing the same position, and splitting time. But I’m glad it worked because it helped me in my NFL career, and I’m sure it helped Craig.”

Putnam then recalled SMU’s legendary 1982 undefeated season, which ended without a national title. “Only undefeated team in the nation, right? Still finished number two. How does that happen?” he asked.

Dickerson agreed. “Most definitely, we got robbed,” he said, referring to that 1982 season when the Mustangs finished unbeaten yet ranked behind Penn State.

Four decades later, the “Pony Express” legacy continues to capture fans’ imaginations. “I’m surprised it has lasted so long,” Dickerson said. “Somebody brings it up at least once a month — on the golf course, at an event — they always ask, ‘How’s the other part of the Pony Express?’”
