The Dallas Wings have fired head coach Chris Koclanes after just one season, following the team’s worst record in the WNBA.
Dallas announced Thursday that Koclanes would not return after finishing 10-34 in his debut campaign and securing the highest odds for the top overall selection in the 2026 WNBA Draft, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
Koclanes, a longtime assistant at the collegiate level who took over the Wings job last October, became the shortest-tenured non-interim head coach in franchise history.
The decision to seek a new head coach comes at a moment when the team has invested heavily in its young core, building around WNBA Rookie of the Year Paige Bueckers and a top-three selection in the upcoming draft.
The Wings’ struggles under Koclanes extended to both sides of the floor, with the team ranking near the bottom of the WNBA in both offensive and defensive efficiency.
Dallas ranked ninth in the WNBA with an offensive rating of just 101.6 last season, while also ranking second-to-last with a defensive rating of 109.1.
Although injuries were an ongoing issue for the team last season, the overall lack of production played a significant role in the team’s decision to move on from the first-year head coach.
Wings General Manager Curt Miller thanked Koclanes for his work and said in a statement that the team remains “dedicated to their pursuit of WNBA championships and building upon the strong culture established on and off the court.”
“With new team facilities being built, a youthful roster under contract, and the rights to three first round draft selections over the next two seasons, including a lottery pick in 2026, the Wings are well-positioned for future success. As we enter a pivotal point in our team’s future, we felt a change in leadership at this time was best for our organization.”
As previously reported by DX and mentioned by Miller, the Dallas City Council recently approved a rezoning request for a $55 million practice facility for the franchise, despite its dismal record.
