Officers with the Denton Police Department have arrested two suspects from Mississippi for murder.
Alfred Jackson Jr., 26, and Olivia Guster, 24, allegedly shot and killed a man in Denton overnight on September 28, according to a statement from the department. They fled the scene, but officers apprehended them.
Jackson and Guster were held in the Denton County Jail on murder charges, according to jail records. Officials also charged Jackson with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and evading arrest or detention.
Jackson is from Pattison, Mississippi, while Guster is from the nearby town of Port Gibson. The towns lie in the southwest corner of the state, near the Mississippi River.
“The affidavits focus on what transpired during this incident and do not specify why they were in Denton,” said Amy Cunningham, Denton police public information liaison, to The Dallas Express.
An Argument Turns Fatal
A witness called 911 to report a fight in a parking lot near 300 W. Eagle Drive at 12:58 a.m. on September 28, according to Denton police. While on the phone, the caller heard gunshots.
Investigators learned that Jackson, Guster, the victim, and the victim’s friend got into a verbal argument about right-of-way in the parking lot. The argument turned physical when Jackson allegedly struck the victim’s head with a shovel, while Guster assaulted the victim and his friend.
“Further evidence revealed Jackson shot the victim and pointed the firearm at the victim’s friend before fleeing with Guster, who drove the vehicle from the scene,” reads the statement from Denton police. “The victim and his friend did not know the suspects.”
When officers arrived, they gave medical aid to the man suffering from a gunshot wound. Responders brought him to a hospital, where he ultimately died.
The Investigation
Witnesses reported Jackson and Guster fled in a vehicle. Denton police stopped the car near 1400 W. University Drive. Then Guster stayed in the vehicle, while Jackson reportedly ran from officers.
“He was arrested a short time later for evading arrest and detention,” the department posted.
Denton police detained Gibson around 1:12 a.m. and arrested Jackson around 1:23 a.m., according to Cunningham—neither resisted arrest.
Detectives obtained arrest warrants for Jackson on charges of murder and aggravated assault, and for Gibson on a murder charge.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the victim’s name, according to Denton police, though his identity was unclear at the time of publication. The department is asking anyone with information on this case to contact Detective Pizana at 940-349-7922.
