White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt says those responsible for a stalled escalator that carried President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump at a recent United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) should be fired and investigated.
Trump and the First Lady were forced to walk up the stalled escalator after it stopped working immediately after the pair stepped on. While UN officials say nothing nefarious took place, the timing of the incident has led some to question whether it was intentional.
An article published in the British publication The Times on Sunday mentioned that UN staff members joked they may turn off the escalators and elevators.
“If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately,” the press secretary posted on X on Tuesday in response to The Times article.

On Tuesday evening, Leavitt was asked on ‘Jesse Watters Primetime’ whether the malfunction might be an act of sabotage.
“That’s definitely what it appears to be to me,” she said, per Fox News. “There was some concerning reporting over the weekend from the London Times… that U.N. globalist staffers were basically plotting to set up the President of the United States,” she said.
According to Leavitt, the U.S. Secret Service was investigating the incident.
“If we find that these were U.N. staffers who were purposefully trying to trip up, literally trip up the President and the First Lady of the United States, well, there better be accountability for those people,” she added.
Media personality Mike Cernovich was even more emphatic over what he believed the appropriate response should be.
“Lock the gates to the UN. All diplomatic visas pulled. Rangers standing guard out front. Building sealed until further notice. Anything less than this is weak and makes Trump a target,” he posted on X.
“Every day needs to be shock and awe. It’s not. It’s jibber jabber. I don’t want a truth social post about the UN elevator putting Trump into a sitting duck situation. I want the UN building seized and secured by Ranger Regiment until further notice!” he said in another post.
