President Trump delivered an address at the United Nations, criticizing the global body for failing to prevent wars and accusing it of issuing “empty words.”
Trump said that while he has taken steps to end several conflicts, the U.N. has been ineffective.
“All they seem to do is write a really strongly worded letter and then never follow that letter up,” Trump said, according to PBS. “It’s empty words, and empty words don’t solve war. The only thing that solves war, and wars, is action.”
Trump also highlighted international allies, praising Argentina’s leadership under President Javier Milei.
“To the people of Argentina, we’re backing him 100%,” Trump said, according to CBS News. “It’s an honor for me to endorse the president and the future president of Argentina.”
Trump also criticized nations seeking to recognize a Palestinian state and urged Europe to take a harder line against Russia.
He accused NATO allies of undermining themselves by continuing to purchase Russian energy.
“Who the hell ever heard of that one?” Trump said, according to Fox News.
“China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil,” Trump said.
“But inexcusably, even NATO countries have not cut off much Russian energy and Russian energy products, which, as you know, I found out about two weeks ago, and I wasn’t happy.”
Trump warned Moscow that the United States is prepared to impose sweeping tariffs if Russia refuses to negotiate a peace agreement.
“In the event that Russia is not ready to make a deal to end the war, then the United States is fully prepared to impose a very strong round of powerful tariffs, which would stop the bloodshed, I believe, very quickly,” Trump said.
“But for those tariffs to be effective, European nations, all of you are gathered here right now, would have to join us in adopting the exact same measures.”
