President Donald Trump on Tuesday called for the death penalty for a repeat offender accused of fatally stabbing a Ukrainian refugee aboard a Charlotte light rail train.

Trump posted on TruthSocial to call for the death penalty for Decarlos Brown, 32, after he was arrested on August 22 for the murder of Iryna Zarutska.

“The ANIMAL who so violently killed the beautiful young lady from Ukraine, who came to America searching for peace and safety, should be given a ‘Quick’ (there is no doubt!) Trial, and only awarded THE DEATH PENALTY. There can be no other option!!!” wrote Trump on TruthSocial.

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Zarutska was fatally stabbed in an unprovoked attack by Brown while aboard a Charlotte light rail train in August, with recently released surveillance footage showing the gruesome scene while bystanders appeared to do nothing to help.

Brown had previously been released by a Charlotte judge despite an extensive criminal history and a diagnosis of schizophrenia, with Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes allowing the release due to a “written promise” that Brown would appear for a court hearing.

Attorney General Pam Bondi echoed Trump’s statements in a news release from the Department of Justice, stating that this attack was “a direct result of failed soft-on-crime policies that put criminals before innocent people.”

“I have directed my attorneys to federally prosecute DeCarlos Brown Jr., a repeat violent offender with a history of violent crime, for murder. We will seek the maximum penalty for this unforgivable act of violence — he will never again see the light of day as a free man.”

The DOJ wrote in the release that Brown has been charged with one count of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system, adding that he “faces a maximum statutory sentence of life in prison or death” if convicted.

“Ultimately, his sentence will be determined by the Court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors,” continued the DOJ.

FBI Director Kash Patel also added comments on the incident, writing in the release that it was a “disgraceful act that should never happen in America” and that the Bureau is prepared to assist in the investigation. “The FBI jumped to assist in this investigation immediately to ensure justice is served and the perpetrator is never released from jail to kill again.”

Moving forward, the FBI will be working alongside the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department in the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Odulio set to prosecute this case.
